Checklist: Implementing Student Threat Assessment

Christine McHugh, Esq., ARM
June 2021

Why Read This

In July 2018, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) released an operational guide for preventing targeted school violence. The NTAC guide establishes minimum guidelines for a comprehensive targeted violence prevention plan and threat assessments on campus.

Based on the NTAC recommendations, this checklist can help schools ensure that their student threat assessment process is well-equipped to identify and address student behavior that might pose a threat of violence.

School administrators can use this checklist to establish a new threat assessment process or to evaluate the effectiveness of an existing process. Topics covered include:

  • Creating a Safe School Climate
  • Forming a Threat Assessment Team
  • Transmitting Information to the Team
  • Assessing Reported Information
  • Intervention and Management
