Richard “Rick” G. Mills, Jr. is responsible for leading the strategic direction of United Educators (UE) and the execution of its operational plans.
He joined UE as President and CEO in September 2023. With a large and diverse membership ranging from big university systems to small, independent K-12 schools, UE provides insurance products and services to help manage education-specific risks. UE has consistently maintained the financial strength and stability to earn an AM Best Rating “A” (Excellent) every year since 1998 and to be named to the list of Wards 50® top performing insurance companies for 2024.
Prior to joining UE, Rick was Dartmouth’s Executive Vice President for Administration. Since 2013, he had served as chief administrative, business, and operating officer, overseeing all aspects of the university's financial, administrative, human resources, and campus services.
Previously he was Executive Dean for Administration at Harvard University’s Medical School from 2005 through 2013. There he also served on the committee on risk management, the boards of Harvard University Library and Harvard Clinical Research Institute, and the underwriting subcommittee of the board for CRICO, the university's captive malpractice insurance company, which insures most Harvard-affiliated practicing physicians.
Before joining Harvard, Rick worked as a litigation attorney, a principal in strategic consulting, and senior staff counsel for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
Rick received a bachelor’s in history from Hamilton College and a law degree from Boston University.
Rick serves on the The Institutes’ Board of Trustees. In addition to exploring the Washington, DC region, Rick enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, and working on his property. He and his wife Gretchen have two adult children.
